DISCUSS SCRIPTURE

(You could break up into pairs and give each pair Scriptures about one of the four sections of the story [GOD, HUMANITY, CHRIST, FAITH] found below to explore together and feedback to the main group afterwards. Or do each section together as a whole group.)

GOD

Genesis 1:1-3

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.”

Exodus 34:6-7

“The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, 7 keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

Colossians 1:16

“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.”

2 Corinthians 13:14

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.”

What stands out to you about who God is in the story of the Bible?

HUMANITY

Genesis 1:27

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

Judges 21:25

“In those days Israel had no king; all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.”

Romans 3:22-23

“There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”

Ephesians 2:1-3

“As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.”

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

What does the story of the Bible tell us about humanity?

CHRIST

Romans 5:6-8

“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Ephesians 2:4-7

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.”

What amazes you about the grace of God in Jesus?

FAITH

Ephesians 2:8-9

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.”

Romans 13:12-13

“For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

What does the story of the Bible communicate about our response to God’s grace?

DISCUSS

  1. What stood out to you from the teaching?

  2. Will talked about the gift of God’s grace being completely free to those who receive it and extremely costly to God who gave it. What amazes you about God’s grace?

  3. Have you encountered God’s grace and said, “Yes” to a relationship with Jesus? Have you been baptised?

  4. Are you responding to His grace by putting Jesus at the centre of your life today?

  5. God’s free gift of grace changes everything. Will unpacked what the grace of God does to us internally in our approach to life, comparing life without grace to life with grace. Which of these stood out to you?

  6. Is there an area of your life that needs to flow out of God’s free gift of grace to you again?

  7. How would your life look different if you were filled with a fresh sense that God’s grace is for you?

Let’s end this session by thanking God for His grace, and receiving His grace either for the first time, or once again. Pray with someone.
